ISO certification in Mumbai is granted by a certification body after it audits your business; it is not a licence from any Mumbai or Maharashtra government department. One certification body with a public Mumbai desk is the Bureau of Indian Standards, India's national standards body: it runs a Management Systems Certification Scheme with an officer at its Western Regional Office in Powai, and publishes audit fees starting at ₹3,000 per man-day for micro enterprises.
Who can certify a Mumbai business to ISO 9001?
You can choose a private certification body or the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Either way, the body audits your Mumbai office or factory and issues the certificate. If a buyer or tender wants accredited certification, confirm the body's accreditation first, as our ISO certification guide for India explains.
BIS is India's national standards body and its member in ISO. It has run its Management Systems Certification Scheme since 1991, starting with quality management system certification to IS/ISO 9001. The scheme now covers, among others:
- IS/ISO 14001 (environment) and IS/ISO 22000 (food safety)
- IS/ISO 50001 (energy) and occupational health and safety
- IS/ISO/IEC 27001:2022 (information security) and IS/ISO 13485 (medical devices)
- FSSAI-recognised food safety audits
Any organisation that makes, assembles or provides a service, with a legal entity in India or abroad, can apply with documents that establish its name and address. Enquiries and applications can go to BIS's Management Systems Certification Officer (West) at the Western Regional Office, 5th Floor, CETTM Building, Technology Street, Hiranandani Gardens, Powai, Mumbai 400076 (022-2570 2718, [email protected]). The scheme has its own complaints and appeals procedure.
What does ISO certification cost in Mumbai?
Private certification bodies set their own prices, and neither ISO nor NABCB fixes them. BIS publishes its fee schedule, and its rates, with taxes extra, give a Mumbai business a useful benchmark when comparing quotes.
| Enterprise size | Application fee | Audit fee per man-day | Licence fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Micro | ₹500 | ₹3,000 | ₹200 |
| Small or medium | ₹500 | ₹9,000 | ₹1,000 |
| Large | ₹1,000 | ₹12,000 | ₹2,000 |
BIS classifies enterprises under the MSMED Act, so check your category with the MSME Classification Calculator or get Udyam registration in Mumbai first. The applicant also bears the auditors' travel, within 250 km of the unit, and their stay at actual cost. Each additional site with similar activities adds 50% of the licence fee, and a second application from an existing licensee or applicant carries no application fee.
Example. A micro packaging unit in Bhandup applies to BIS for IS/ISO 9001. If the audit takes two man-days, the published fees come to ₹500 + (2 × ₹3,000) + ₹200 = ₹6,700, plus taxes and the auditors' travel and stay. A small enterprise with the same two man-days would pay ₹500 + ₹18,000 + ₹1,000 = ₹19,500 plus taxes.
What an ISO certificate does not replace in Maharashtra
An ISO certificate is not a statutory licence. It does not stand in for any Maharashtra or central registration your Mumbai business needs by law.
- Food businesses. FDA Maharashtra is the state's regulator for food safety and handles food registration and licensing. ISO 22000 does not replace your FSSAI registration in Mumbai.
- Factories and industrial units. Consent under the Water Act, 1974 and the Air Act, 1981 comes from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, which classifies industries as red, orange, green or white. ISO 14001 does not replace that consent.
- Products under quality control orders. For a number of products the Central Government makes the BIS Standard Mark compulsory, under a BIS licence or certificate of conformity. BIS's Mumbai Branch Office-I, also in Powai, handles product certification for Mumbai City, Mumbai Suburban, Nashik and Palghar districts. An ISO 9001 certificate does not meet this requirement.
Preparing a Mumbai office or factory for the audit
Start with your papers: certification bodies ask for documents that establish your name and address, so the details in your application should match your registration records. A company registered in Mumbai City or Mumbai Suburban has its name and address on record with the ROC, Mumbai-I.
- Keep the name identical across your MCA record, your GSTIN (Maharashtra GSTINs begin with 27) and your application.
- List every site in the scope. A trader with an office in Masjid and a godown in Wadala needs both covered if both carry out the certified activities.
- If your Mumbai office is rented, shared or in a co-working space, keep the agreement ready as proof of address.
- Book the audit for a day when the people who run each process are present, including any outsourced accountant or storekeeper who keeps the records.
ISO 9001:2026 deadlines for businesses already certified in Mumbai
If your Mumbai business holds an ISO 9001:2015 certificate, plan to move it to the 2026 edition at your next scheduled audit. NABCB's transition policy requires organisations certified under its accreditation to complete the move, with a revised certificate issued, before 30 September 2028.
After 31 March 2028, NABCB-accredited bodies issue new certifications only to ISO 9001:2026. Ask your certification body, whether BIS in Powai or a private body, when it will be ready to audit against the new edition and whether a separate transition audit is needed.
Checking a Mumbai supplier's ISO certificate
When a Mumbai vendor sends you an ISO certificate during onboarding or a tender, search the supplier's name or certificate number on IAF CertSearch, which shows the scope, issuing body and status, and treat a missing record as a reason to ask the issuing body rather than as proof of a fake.
For certificates issued under NABCB accreditation, NABCB verifies authenticity by email at [email protected]. For a BIS certificate, contact the Western Regional Office in Powai. Check that the certified scope actually covers the goods or services you are buying, and that the address matches the supplier's Mumbai premises.
