This guide explains Udyam registration number verification: what the UDYAM number format tells you, how to confirm the live record on the government portal, and when a business should check a supplier's number. The tool above checks only that a number is well formed. The registered details live on the government Udyam Registration portal, and only a check there confirms them.
How to check Udyam registration on the official portal
Use the "Verify Udyam Registration" option under Print/Verify on the Udyam Registration portal of the Ministry of MSME. Enter the full Udyam Registration Number and the captcha, and the portal shows the registered details, such as the enterprise's name and MSME category.
The steps:
- Run the number through the tool above, which tidies spaces and dashes into the UDYAM-XX-00-0000000 pattern.
- Open the portal's Udyam Registration Online Verification page, or choose Print/Verify, then "Verify Udyam Registration", from the home page.
- Enter the number exactly as formatted, with the dashes, and the captcha, which is case sensitive.
- Compare the name shown with the name on the invoice, contract or certificate, and note the category.
A second route is the certificate itself. Every Udyam Registration Certificate carries a dynamic QR code that opens the enterprise's page on the portal. Scanning it is a quick check, but type the number into the portal yourself if anything looks off, since a printed QR code can be copied onto a fake document.
What the UDYAM number format tells you
A Udyam Registration Number follows the pattern UDYAM-XX-00-0000000: the word UDYAM, a two-letter state code, a two-digit district code and a seven-digit serial number. A number that fits the pattern is well formed, nothing more.
The format check catches typing errors: a missing digit, the letter O typed for a zero, a district code with one digit, or an old number from a different scheme. It cannot tell you whether the number was issued, who holds it, or whether it is still active. A made-up number in the right pattern passes the format check and fails on the portal.
Two older numbers still turn up on letterheads and vendor forms:
- Udyog Aadhaar (UAM) and EM Part-II numbers. Under paragraph 7 of notification S.O. 2119(E), their holders had to register again on Udyam. Registrations made before 30 June 2020 stayed valid only until 30 June 2022, the last extension under S.O. 2134(E) of 6 May 2022.
- Udyam Assist Platform (UAP) registrations for informal micro enterprises, which the portal handles separately from Udyam registration.
If a supplier quotes a UAM number, ask for its Udyam number instead.
When should a business verify a Udyam number?
Verify before you rely on a supplier's MSME status for money, tax or eligibility. The most common reason is payment terms: micro and small suppliers are protected against late payment, and a buyer that pays them late loses the tax deduction for that year. Medium enterprises do not get this protection.
Typical moments to check:
- Vendor onboarding. Record the Udyam number and category in the vendor master.
- Year-end close. A buyer can deduct an amount owed to a micro or small enterprise beyond the time limit in section 15 of the MSMED Act 2006 only in the year it is paid, under section 37(2)(g) of the Income-tax Act 2025 (section 43B(h) of the 1961 Act).
- Tenders and schemes. Udyam registration links to benefits such as the Public Procurement Policy, credit guarantee schemes and priority sector lending from banks, so buyers and lenders check it.
- Delayed payment claims. Micro and small enterprises can raise delayed payment issues through the SAMADHAAN portal, and the buyer will want to see that the supplier's registration is genuine.
Categories change. Under paragraph 8 of S.O. 2119(E), the portal updates each enterprise's classification from its ITR and GST data, so a supplier that was small last year can be medium now. Check again at least once a year, and use the MSME classification calculator if a supplier shares its figures.
Worked example: checking a supplier before year end
The check takes two minutes and can change the year in which an expense is deductible. Here is how it plays out for a made-up buyer and supplier.
Example. Bluepeak Foods Private Limited receives an invoice for ₹5,00,000 that quotes "udyam mh 18 0012345" (an illustrative number). The tool formats it as UDYAM-MH-18-0012345 and confirms the pattern. On the portal, the number shows the supplier's name and the category "Small". Bluepeak accepted the goods on 1 February 2027 but pays on 30 April 2027, 88 days later and well past 45 days. Under section 37(2)(g), the ₹5,00,000 is deductible in tax year 2027-28, when it is paid, not in tax year 2026-27. The supplier can also claim compound interest at three times the RBI bank rate.
Had the portal shown "Medium", neither the deduction rule nor the interest rule would have applied to this supplier.
What to do if the portal details do not match
If the portal finds no record, or the name or category differs from what the supplier told you, ask the supplier for its certificate and check the number again character by character. Most mismatches are typing errors or an old UAM number.
Other situations:
- Your own number is lost. The portal's "Forgot Udyam/UAM Number" page sends an OTP to the mobile number or email given in the application and then shows all numbers registered against it.
- Your own details are wrong. Use "Update/Cancel Udyam Registration" on the portal to correct them. Each enterprise must also update its ITR and GST details every year, or its status can be suspended.
- You suspect a false registration. Under paragraph 9(4) of S.O. 2119(E), the General Manager of the District Industries Centre enquires into discrepancies and forwards the matter to the state's Director, Commissioner or Secretary of Industries, who can amend the details or recommend cancellation. Misrepresentation in a Udyam registration attracts a penalty under section 27 of the MSMED Act 2006.
For a supplier that is a company or LLP, decode its number with the CIN and LLPIN lookup and confirm the record on the MCA portal. Check its GSTIN with the GSTIN validator, then confirm it is active on the GST portal.
Common mistakes when checking a Udyam number
Most errors come from trusting a document instead of the portal. Watch for these:
- Treating a valid format as proof of registration.
- Accepting a PDF certificate without checking the number on the portal.
- Accepting a UAM or EM Part-II number in place of a Udyam number.
- Relying on a category recorded years ago. Classification is updated every year.
- Paying a website to "verify" or "download" a Udyam certificate. The portal states that it is the only government portal for Udyam registration and that registration is free.
- Assuming every registered MSME is protected by the 45-day rule. Only micro and small enterprises are.
