Import Export Code Registration

Importer Exporter Code (IEC) is a key business identification number which is mandatory for Imports or Exports. No person shall import or export except under the IEC number allotted by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). An importer or exporter needs the IE Code and GST Registration to clear the Goods from the customs. Therefore it is mandatory to obtain Importer Exporter Code to start import or export business.

Consequent upon the introduction of Goods and Services Tax (GST) in the year 2017, the IEC being issued is the same as PAN of the business entity. However the IEC is still be issued by the DGFT separately.

Earlier the Importer Exporter Code used to be valid for lifetime. However, vide its notification number 58/2015-2020 dated 12th February, 2021, the DGFT has amended the provision related to IEC. As per the notification the IEC holder is required to update the IEC electronically every year from April to June. If there are no changes to the particulars of the IEC holder, then also the updation and confirmation are required from the IEC holder.
